10 Tips for FUN Urdu Teaching At Home

 by Mrs. F

1. Any language can be learned fluently when you listen to it, speak it, reading comes way later.

Speak your mother tongue at home...and be proud of it.

I understand the pressure on our bilingual kids juggling English and Urdu, often Urdu gets neglected in the balance. Kids dread Urdu and find it challenging when we compare it to English.

Luckily our kids are blessed with Urdu apps and Urdu YouTube videos. As a Mom, it's your job to expose them to how fun it can be and the right kind of stuff out there.

To teach both languages fluently...apply this one rule that worked in my home.

"Speak Urdu with Family but when you Play speak English "

2. Invest in good Urdu Storybooks.

Alternate between English and Urdu stories at bedtime. Kids must get enough exposure to both languages. Revive the old stories of your childhood, the ones your Nani Dadi used to tell you bond over them.

3. Watch Good Urdu Cartoons and kid shows.

We now have enough variety on our screens but filtering through the right kind can be a challenge

Some I recommend are

Hamara Sim Sim for toddlers

Abdul Bari

Quaid se batein

Burka avengers for young kids.

4. Paste a Haroof Tahijji poster on your wall at home.

It must be attention-grabbing and colorful. Stick it on a wall and pass by it regularly to recall some haroof daily. Print one out or buy large ones easily available at local book stores.

5. Buy or make your own Urdu puzzle games and flashcards.

At Funversity we share useful resources daily take advantage of them or download your very own, many printables are just a click away. Its good to invest in puzzles and blocks.

Take a tray and fill it with salt or sand and trace haroof for writing practice, this activity costs nothing and instills the formations in your child's sensory memory.

6. Memorize the haroof tahjii song orally before Urdu starts at school.

Check out youtube for the best one you can sing to

I recommend the one below.

7. Concepts to give at home.

Kids should have these concepts before Urdu starts at school

How many Nuqtay? konsay haroof Khali he?

Dai and bai Urdu left/right directions.

From which side you start to write Urdu.

Doing this early will reduce the transition struggle in school.

8. So many Alphabets to cover in a year!

26 in English, 35 in Urdu can be confusing to cover for your little one in a year. Knowing the difference between English and Urdu alphabets is important.

Some activities you can do at home.

1.    Sorting English and Urdu Alphabets into different piles or containers.

2.    Alphabets that sound the same should be explained there is always a minor difference when it comes to pronouncing them.

9. Get colorful and engaging workbooks and Apps

Download Fun Apps and Worksheets we share on Funversity or buy a Workbooks with colorful pictures related to each haroof to enrich vocabulary.

10. Game Urdu word of the week.

Enforce that specific word throughout the week orally in different sentence s used in daily life.

Usually, English medium schools in Pakistan don't start Urdu in the first year of playgroup /prenursery/ level 1

And jump on it directly covering a lot in just 1 year. This abrupt transition is stressful for kids..so I recommend start working at home side by side during preschool year one.

Your goal should be

for Age 2 to 3 years

·     Memorizing the Urdu haroof song orally only.

·     Speaking Urdu at home.

·     Introduce poori ashkaal first.
